Jean Frédéric Bazille |
Bazille, a prominent figure in the Ecole des Batignolles, exhibited this portrait of his family on the terrace of their property outside Montpellier at the Salon of 1868. The painting's grand scale and bold treatment of a conventional subject suggest that Bazille aimed to ensure the work would be accepted by the conservative jury. Nonetheless, his provocative experimentation with the strong effects of light and shadow, characteristic of the south of France, reveals a fascination with motifs and techniques that later became hallmarks of Impressionism.
